Xiamen has a fairly gentle and agreeable climate, with only slight temperature and climatic changes month by month. The summer weather in Xiamen is rarely too hot, while the winters are mild and quite pleasant at times, although some strong north-easterly winds are not uncommon.

The climate in Xiamen is often described as sub-tropical and monsoon like, due to some particularly heavy periods of rain. The highest levels of precipitation can be expected from April to August, with the month of June tending to be the wettest, when you can expect around 190 mm / 7.5 inches of rain, amidst the fine, sunny weather and possibility of typhoons.

Much of the climate in Xiamen is influenced by its coastal setting and the hottest and sunniest weather falls between July and September, when temperatures are between 25ºC / 77ºF to 30ºC / 86ºF and the beaches quickly fill up. Xiamen boasts an average of more than six hours of sunshine each day, meaning that there is usually plenty to go around, whatever the time of year.

During the winter months of November to February, the temperatures in Xiamen stay much higher than more northerly parts of the People's Republic of China, rarely dropping below 10ºC / 50ºF and usually staying much higher. January and February feature the coldest climate of the year and whilst the temperatures remain fairly mild, the breezes add a definite wind-chill factor and can make it feel considerably colder.

A particularly appealing time to visit Xiamen is during May, June and July, when the temperatures are at their optimum and by no means excessive.
